How did this project happen?
W21 wanted to collaborate with other Santa Fe arts institutions, and College of Santa Fe art department chair, Kim Russo, recognized that as an excellent opportunity for students to get involved in the community. Together, they decided that CSF students would design and paint a floor mural for the concert hall space at the new W21 building, located right behind SITE Santa Fe.
Students in two College of Santa Fe (CSF) classes, Experimental Painting (taught by Professor Kim Russo) and Typography (Professor David Grey), created seven mural designs for the Warehouse 21 (W21) new concert space floor. Working in small, collaborative groups, CSF students created seven designs and voted on the best two. The two winning designs were presented to the W21 board of trustees and staff members, who chose the Chemistry Set design as the winner. Then over the course of 6 weeks, students in both classes painted the design on the floor.

The Design
The Chemistry Set symbolizes the transformative vision of W21 and the positive energy of Santa Fe's creative youth culture. Young people enter W21 with ideas and inspiration, and through experiences in the visual arts, theater, and music, EXPLODE with creativity and confidence.
Many of the paint colors were purchased from Day-Glo Paints--and those colors will GLOW under blacklight!!

How long did it take?
CSF students developed design ideas and plans during the entire spring semester. Painting began on April 26 and was completed on May 25. To draw the design on the floor and then paint and seal it took approximately 200 man-hours.
